Soul Sanctuary is an exhibition that captures the essence and rhythms
of the black church. Over the course of ten years, photographer Jason Miccolo
Johnson traversed the country, visiting large “mega-churches,” and small
“store-front” churches. During that time he took more than 15,000 black and
white images of which 75 are included in the exhibition and the companion
book. Soul Sanctuary: Images of the African American Worship Experience
published by Bulfinch Press (Hatchette Book Group) 2006, will be available for
purchase in the Museum Store.

Through arresting photographs, Johnson provides a “multi-denominational
journey into the heart of the black worship experience.” Viewers are invited to
observe behind-the-scenes preparatory work that designated parishioners
must complete before church begins. We also witness spirit-filled moments,
expressed in the faces and body language of the faithful during the worship
service, and observe heartfelt Christian fellowship following the benediction. In
his signature “call and response” style of photography, Johnson focuses on his
subjects’ hands and eyes, for he has discovered that it is in these areas that
congregants unwittingly reveal their souls.
